Deck & Fence Staining
Protect your wood and composite surfaces from Florida's sun, humidity, and salt air with a stain that lasts.
What’s included
KB Painting & Refinishing handles deck and fence staining from the ground up — surface prep, repair coordination, product selection, and application. Services cover:
- Pressure washing and mildew treatment to remove biological growth common in Florida’s humidity
- Light sanding or hand-scraping of any loose or peeling existing finish
- Spot priming of bare or damaged areas before stain application
- Full stain application using Sherwin-Williams products selected for the material (wood or composite) and exposure level
- A walkthrough with you at completion to confirm the finish meets your expectations
We do not subcontract. The crew that shows up is on our payroll — experienced, vetted, and accountable to us directly.
Our prep-first process
A stain applied over dirty, wet, or unsound wood won’t last. That’s why prep takes as much time as the application itself. We wash every surface, let it dry to the moisture content the product requires, and address any soft or cracked boards before we open a can. We also test the existing surface for compatibility when there’s a prior stain in place, so we’re not guessing about adhesion.
If boards need replacement before staining, we’ll note it in the estimate. We’d rather tell you upfront than stain over a problem.
Why Florida is hard on outdoor wood
The combination of intense UV, daily humidity swings, occasional salt air, and heavy summer rain cycles breaks down unprotected wood faster here than in most of the country. Mold and mildew colonize within weeks of a wet season. Horizontal deck boards face the worst of it — standing water, direct sun, and foot traffic all at once.
We choose stain formulas specifically rated for high-UV and high-moisture environments, not general-purpose products. Semi-transparent options let the grain show while still building UV resistance. Solid color stains provide maximum protection for older or weathered wood. We’ll recommend the right product for your material, your HOA’s color guidelines if applicable, and the level of exposure your deck or fence actually sees.

Common questions
How long does a deck or fence stain last in South Florida?
In our climate, a properly prepped solid or semi-transparent stain typically holds 3–5 years on horizontal deck surfaces and 5–7 years on vertical fence boards. UV intensity, proximity to salt air, and wood species all affect the timeline. We back every job with our 5-year workmanship warranty, so if the finish fails due to application we'll return and make it right.
What factors affect the cost of staining my deck or fence?
The main cost drivers are total square footage, the current condition of the wood (heavy mildew, old peeling stain, or gray weathering requires more prep), the product selected, and accessibility. Composite decking costs less to prep than bare wood but needs a specific bonding formula. We provide a free written estimate before any work begins so there are no surprises.
Do you stain composite decking, or only wood?
We work with both. Composite decking doesn't absorb stain the way wood does, so we use a penetrating, composite-compatible formula from Sherwin-Williams rather than a film-forming stain. The process also skips sanding and uses a gentler low-pressure wash to avoid damaging the surface texture. If you're unsure what you have, we'll identify the material during your free estimate.
